cycling

When just one person chooses not to eat meat, they have profound impact on our environment and the lives of thousands of defenseless animals.  Similarly, when one person trades in their car for a bicycle, the effects are tangible and far-reaching:

  • We decrease our reliance on foreign oil.

  • We free up space on our congested streets.

  • We reduce the amount of pollution being released into our atmosphere.

For these, and many more reasons, we have a special affinity for the cycling community.  Here's how we plan to reach out:

1  V Bike Parking

After we sign the lease, one of the first things we'll do is contact the city to have bike racks installed on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant.  Also, if you left for a training ride and didn't bring a lock, or if you just plain forgot it, just bring your bike right in.  We'll find a place for it.

2  Community Space

We will be personally inviting cycling organizations of all shapes and sizes to take advantage of our community room.  We would be honored to host meetings, social events, and fundraisers of local bike-related organizations.

3  AIDS/LifeCycle (ALC)

Both owners are veteran AIDS/LifeCyclers.  We will invite ALC participants to utilize our space to host their fundraisers, and we'll be more than happy to host public ALC Information Meetings. We would also like to contribute food to ALC events and offer a discount to registered ALC participants.

4  Critical Mass Happy Hour

Critical Mass is leader-less coincidental convergence of bicycle commuters that gather monthly to participate in a bicycle parade in cities around the world.  Masses usually include music, costumes, sometimes nudity, and always humor.  Critical Mass may not be the answer in winning over the hearts and minds of the city's motorists, but more importantly, it encourages bicycle commuting and builds community among cyclists.  V supports Critical Mass and offers post-Critical Mass specials to participants.

5  Race Sponsorship

V's owners have both raced and are big fans of bike racing.  Bike racing is the sport of misfits.  Most sports figures are held up high on the public's shoulders and regarded as heroes.  They are paid ridiculous amounts of money.  But here in the US, bike racers are treated like weirdos and are paid little if anything at all.  Fortunately, Lance Armstrong has helped to turn the perception around, but we have a long way to go.

We would like to start out with a small sponsorship, probably food credit for an annual awards banquet.  Once we are more established, we would hope to expand that sponsorship to cash as well.

6  Bike Messengers

Bike messengers are one of the most underappreciated, underpaid, and under-benefitted group of professionals.  We recognize that they are vital to our city's commerce, that their jobs are extremely dangerous, that they work without benefits (rain or shine), and that they are often seen as thieves by office building security.  To show our respect for their dedication and radical self expression, V will offer members of the San Francisco Bicycle Association our fancy organic beer at PBR prices.  We'll also offer our community room to the messenger community (specifically to the San Francisco Bike Messenger Association) for meetings, special events and fundraisers.

7  San Francisco Bicycle Coalition

Last but not least, we will work with the SFBC in whatever way we can.  Their important work has helped to make San Francisco the most bike friendly city of its size in the US.  The Coalition's dedication and professionalism continues to win victories large and small, for ordinary cyclists that just want to get around safely, quickly, and comfortably - on a bicycle.

Our Position

V is not anti-car. Anti-Hummer, yes.

Anyone who trades in a gas guzzling SUV for a more fuel efficient car gets a nod of approval from us.

Upgrade to a hybrid and we'll salute you.

Riding a motorcycle is definitely sexier than driving a car.

And our hats are off to anyone with the patience to take public transportation

But apart from walking, there is no better mode of transportation for the environment than the bicycle.  That's why we love cyclists the best.
